Fullness of Faith

Inspired by my Protestant brothers who embrace Jesus’s Faith through devout devotion to the Bible, it points out as well the gap lacking in Faith that we, both Protestants and Catholics alike, share and the challenge we have to find Jesus.  In our own separate ways, the Christian world has their blinders on that prevent one from truly finding Jesus.  One may be of great Faith, but the fact is, we, me definitely included, have large blind spots.  We tend to put Jesus in this box that we define who Jesus is and how He has rolled out His Kingdom, which is not totally and really who Jesus is.  We like to insert a little of “me” into who Jesus is.

So, what is wrong by inserting a little me into who I perceive Jesus is?  Aren’t we created in His likeness?  Well, the thing is here, the original statement above is backwards.  When I insert a little of my identity into who Jesus is to me, I then create a new “god” that is part Jesus and part me – Johnsus – which allows me then to justify me not totally following Jesus’ teachings and biddings by injecting my bias as into what Jesus really wants and needs me to believe, be and do.

The Protestant penchant to study the Bible and evangelize has put us Catholics to shame and has finally served notice to the members and caretakers of Jesus’ Church that we need to be better stewards of our own infinite gift and mandate that Jesus gave – Go make disciples of the world.  Even in the deep-seated Faith, the general Protestant Faith still remains incomplete.  In the same way, many Catholics’ Faith is also similarly incomplete as beliefs of academic type learning about many of the teachings of the Church have not been truly grasped as a point of deep Faith.

Does one have the Faith to truly believe that Jesus had the ability and capability, as God, to create and institute the Eucharist as stated in the Bible?  Does one truly believe that God has the ability and capability to establish Saints in Heaven and Angels that can hear and communicate our prayers to and through Jesus?  Does one truly believe that Jesus had the ability and capability to establish His Church, establishing His hand picked Apostles, and set up a Church with a succession that continues to this day?

So, as a point of Faith, I need to live rooted in both the Bible and Jesus’ Church that He created for the world.  I need to follow Jesus’ teachings and examples held within the Bible, because those are vast and Heaven sent, but I need the guidance of Mother Church and the Tradition of the teaching and administration of the early Church by Jesus’ hand picked Apostles and their successors to fully understand and execute my journey toward the light of Jesus and my salvation. I need to have the Faith and courage to step out of my comfort box of Faith with the Bible under one arm, but stepping out with Jesus’ Church as my driving and guiding force to lead me to Jesus and my Heavenly reward.

So, for me as a Catholic and; therefore, a Christian, I need to grasp my Faith and give it more reality in my life.  I have all these points of Faith and truth available to me that Jesus, through His Church, has put right in front of me.  It is now up to me to grab and run with it.  I need to take on and emulate my Protestant brothers’ intensity to devour the Bible.  I need to take my Protestant brothers’ intensity, tenacity and fortitude to evangelize, to share my Faith, to share with my fellow neighbors the reason for my hope.[1] I need, and invite all my readers to take another deep look at the Bible, to take a step back and really look for the truths given. If one tells one’s self or others that, “surely Jesus did not intend to say that or mean that”, probably one is trying to insert a little “me” into what is being read in that Bible verse. If the Bible says one thing, don’t try to make it say something else.

There are so many Christian denominations out there, each with a different spin on the various controversial texts of the Bible. They range from totally ignoring the verse to creating a story to get around to what fits the denomination’s theology.  We need To seek Jesus and find Him, seek the truth through Jesus’ Church, without any predetermined “me” insertions which then water down or even subvert Jesus’ total truths taught. We need Jesus’ Church that has produced not only the authorship of His Bible, but also the teachings of the Apostles, Church Fathers, Doctors of the Church, current day saints and the full body of the Saints Triumphant that have guided the billions of His disciples in Jesus’ Church for almost 2000 years. We need to look at the sincere truths that Jesus intended to tell and instruct us, through the Gospel and Epistle writers, plus the other eye witnesses of Jesus’ walk on this earth. Those who filled the pews (if there was such a thing then) in the first days of Christ’s Church. Those who many were then martyred for their Faith. Those who would challenge us, by their blood shed, to learn and emulate, then take this, the Lord’s truths, wisdom, joy and peace, out to the world.  Amen
